SELF-DRIVE PHOTO SAFARI IN NAMIBIA 2012

You are invited to join a small group to photograph the best landscapes and wildlife in one of the most surprising countries in Africa - Namibia.

This photo safari is different to others.

Participants will self-drive 4WD vehicles - Toyota Land Cruisers or similar.

4WD experience would be a bonus but is not essential. Serious off road adventures are not planned and 4WD’s are selected for their ability to handle Namibia's unsealed roads (which are excellent to drive on).

Starting in Windhoek, the map on the right gives you an idea of the distances we plan for each "leg". With the exception of the first and last day, all driving will be on unsealed roads.

The choice to have only two photographers per vehicle is yours -an unheard of luxury on safari.

Gaining almost exclusive access to the selected locations in Namibia, is in the top five "dream" photo safaris for photographers worldwide.

Iconic Images International specializes in organizing top end photographic safaris and this one promises to deliver 'top drawer' photography for both professional and amateur photographers.

The search for a truely rewarding adventure ends when you discover Namibia. It is a country of surreal beauty, pristine wilderness and abundant wildlife. For those who chose to frame the world through a lens, Namibia's optimum light, spectacular landscapes and intriguing diversity of animals and people, opens up a wide world of photographic possibilities.

Iconic Images International will again work in partnership with the South African-based company C4 Images & Safaris.

C4's local knowledge, extensive African experience, and the company’s focus on running only specialized tours for photographers are a perfect fit with Iconic Image International's objectives for this photo safari.

C4's philosophy of using the best guides, to get clients to the best locations, in the best season, so they can capture the best photos mirrors that of Iconic Images International.

The founder of C4, Shem Compion will co-lead this safari with Jay Collier, Canon Australia and myself.

You will have three, professional, dedicated nature/wildlife photographers to assist you capture some of Namibia's iconic subjects.

HIGHLIGHTS OF PHOTO SAFARI & BEGINNERS

The highlights of this photo safari are:

  • The freedom and flexibility of driving your own 4WD vehicle in the safety of a small convey of like-minded photographers; registrations are confined to a maximum of ten

  • Being in Namibia at the best time of the year, we will avoid the overcrowding that occurs in Aug/Sept and explore at our own pace; you will experience connoisseur photography and travel.

  • We have selected the best locations for the best photography:

         - the highly photogenic quiver tree forests

         - the ghost town of Kolmanskop and its abandoned buildings

         - the stunning dune landscapes of Sossusvlei (an option from the air)

         - the near mystical experience of pre-dawn Dead Vlei

         -  the city of Swakoupmund with its German architecture

         - the inclusion of a 1-day "Wildlife Photography" Workshop

         - the Skeleton Coast with its ship wrecks and huge seal colony

         - the remote Damaraland and its unique desert elephants

         - the still intact culture of the Himba people

         - 6 days in one of the best game reserves in Africa - Etosha

         - the Africacat Foundation and its conservation work with large cats

         - photograph Africa's wild dogs, now an endangered species

It would be difficult to create a photo safari that contains more iconic locations and photographic opportunities and contain it to three weeks in the one country.

What about those with limited wildlife photography skills?

You are most welcome. You will be encouraged to try out different techniques and learn not only from the safari leaders, but from other experienced photographers in the group. All we ask of “first timers” to Africa and those with limited know-how in photographing wildlife is your patience. This is a photography safari that is unashamedly dedicated to capturing iconic images of extraordinary landscapes and wildlife. Wildlife photography in particular requires patience, patience and more patience. We will teach beginners the value of patience in the field - they will be rewarded with a new concept of nature and some great images.

YOUR PHOTO SAFARI LEADERS

Shem Compion : Shem Compion is the founder and owner of C4 Images and Safaris. He uses his intricate knowledge of travel in Africa, its wildlife and the best photographic locations to give you the best photographic safari experience possible.

Shem grew up roaming the wilds and this interest in nature led to him studying a National Diploma in Nature Conservation and Wildlife Management. With over 20 years of bush experience it was quite logical he was going to end up working in the natural world.

A self-taught wildlife photographer, Shem quickly established himself as one of the best wildlife photographers in South Africa. His work is regularly published worldwide in magazines, calendars and books. In 2010, he supplied all 72 images to the extremely popular Africa Geographic calendar. It sold out within 4 months - the first time ever.

He published his first book “A Landscape of Insects” in 2009 and his second book, "Insider's Guide" was relaeased in December 2010. He is in the final stages of publishing two more books. Shem is a regular speaker at photo events and has presented photo workshops for organisations such as National Geographic and has been a keynote speaker at international photographic conventions.

Denis Glennon AO : For many years Denis’ passions were the wide open spaces of ocean sailing, and the conservation of nature; they remain so.

In 2000 he was awarded an Order of Australia (AO), in recognition of his contribution to pollution prevention, and environmental management. Having spent seven years in Africa and thirty plus years in the corporate world, he is a self-taught wildlife and nature photographer.

He now combines his affections for travel, wildlife and nature preservation, with conservation photography in far-flung places that include Zambia, Kenya, Namibia, South Africa, Asia, Patagonia, Chile, Antarctica, Japan and Australia.

His articles and images have been published in Australia & overseas and he has been a finalist in the ANZANG and the BBC/British Museum Wildlife competitions. His image "Morning Mist" won the "Wilderness" category in ANZANG 2010.

Jay Collier : Jay has been photographing African wildlife professionally since 2004. Having travelled to destinations including Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana and South Africa, Jay has built a strong portfolio of images as well as a deep knowledge of the diverse species and behaviours of Africa’s wildlife. Working in the professional photographic industry for over eleven years, Jay currently works for Canon Australia running Canon Professional Services (CPS) and is responsible for supporting many of Australia’s leading professional photographers.

His technical understanding of photographic theory and the technologies, features and functions of today's cameras and lenses is second to none. This expertise has been acumulated from working with both Canon and Nikon, in the professional photographic divisions of both companies. Participants will be able to avail of it during the safari.

Jay is also employed by Taronga Zoo, Sydney, and has developed and runs short courses in photography for Taronga Training Institute.

His images and articles have been published in magazines, including Africa Geographic and Better Photography, and in commercial adverting campaigns in Australia. In 2007, several of Jay’s images made it through to the semi final stage of judging with the BBC World Wildlife Photo competition.

All three leaders are passionate, competent and experienced nature and wildlife photographers. Denis & Jay use Canon and Shem uses Nikon equipment.
