KEYNOTE SPEAKER

The March 2011 edition of "Africa Geographic" described Shem Compion as: "one of southern Africa's leading nature and wildlife photographers".

Shem is a naturalist and professional photographer working throughout Africa.

His work is published worldwide.

He will be the principal speaker at this "one off" seminar Perth on 20th August 2011.

He has written two books:

  • A Landscape of Insects (co-authored with Duncan MacFadyen)
  • Insider's Guide - an insider's "road map" to the top nature & wildlife photography spots in South Africa. An excellent publication - it will become a classic.

He owns C4 Images & Safaris which is the largest specialist photography tour company in southern Africa. C4 Images also conducts a series of nature & wildlife photography workshops in South Africa.

I have worked with Shem for a number of years and we take photographers and their spouses/partners on photo tours to some of the most photogenic places in Africa.

Shem's knowledge of animal behaviour and the African bush is astounding as is his passion for using photography for conservation.

He is an exceptional photographer, and has garnered top awards, including the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year (the toughest competition in this genre) and the Fuji Film/Getaway Wildlife Awards.

Being an excellent teacher, his life is centred around sharing information about a subject he loves.

This will be Shem's first visit to Australia.

What Will The Seminar Cover?

The content will be kept fluid to ensure we respond to participants' specific interests and queries about nature and wildlife photography.

The "road map" for the day is as follows:

  • Nature's seasons and how these influence photographic opportunities.
  • Animal/bird behaviour and why a working knowledge of this will help you capture compelling images.
  • "My Creative Journey" - revealing Shem's journey through a photographic path.
  • Learning to trust your instincts rather than the photography teachers.
  • The joy of expanding your creative vision.
  • Discovering your audience who will allow you to become a better photographer.
  • Forgetting the camera to take better images.
  • Discovering that "it hasn't all been done before" and capitalizing on that.
  • The ideal selection of cameras and lenses for great nature and wildlife photography or what's "in the bag" when you go on safari.
  • Africa's wildlife and nature "hot spots" and how to choose the best photography options.
  • Upcoming small group photo tours especially designed for Australian photographers.
  • Stunning images from two professional wildlife photographers and how they were captured, including all technical details.

For additional details on what I photograph please visit www.denisglennon.com .

When there, you may wish to browse through the pages "Profile" and "Conservation Photography" and have look at the images in "Galleries".
